Smith may miss Champions Trophy with ankle injury

LONDON (AP) — South Africa captain Graeme Smith is to have surgery on an ankle injury and could miss next month's Champions Trophy.

Surrey, Smith's English county side, says the opening batsman needs an operation in South Africa after receiving the results of scans on Wednesday and "will miss a few months of the English county season."

The Champions Trophy takes place in England and Wales from June 6 to 23.

Surrey says Smith's ongoing ankle problems are "caused by a hard winter's cricket for the Proteas."
