National Day of Prayer observed on Capitol Hill

WASHINGTON (AP) — The 2013 National Day of Prayer has been observed on Capitol Hill with a three-hour ceremony.

Shirley Dobson, who chairs the annual event, said America desperately needs prayer at a time when the nation is "steeped in violence, with bombings and killings occurring around us every few days."

Other speakers lamented the redefinition of marriage and what they saw as growing hostility to religion. Senate Chaplain Barry Black warned that sin could destroy America and urged hundreds at the gathering to pray for their leaders.

Congressmen Frank Wolf, R-Va., and Robert Aderholt, R-Ala., assured the assembled that many lawmakers meet regularly to pray.

Organizers say the Capitol Hill event was one of 42,000 National Day of Prayer observances being held nationwide.
