Boyfriend sentenced in NYC cold-case killing

NEW YORK (AP) — A man will spend 18 years to life in prison for the beheading of his pregnant girlfriend in New York City in 1989.

Philip Ward was sentenced Friday in Manhattan and gave a tearful apology. He pleaded guilty to murder on March 22 in the death of Veronica Bowen.

Ward already is in prison for killing the woman who became his girlfriend after Bowen's death in a New York suburb.

The sentences will be consecutive.

Bowen's naked, headless body was found on the rooftop of her Upper Manhattan apartment building. Her head was never found.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. says the case was solved by persistent cold-case units.

Prosecutors said Ward attacked Bowen after learning she was pregnant with another man's child.
