Wrecked car towed to impound lot with body inside

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The body of a missing North Carolina woman was found inside her wrecked car, three days after a state trooper ordered it to be towed to an impound lot.

Sixty-two-year-old Carolyn Ann Watkins was reported missing by her son early Monday after she failed to show up at work.

An accident report filed Friday by Trooper Marlon Williams shows her 2000 Pontiac was found in a deep ditch near Smithfield. Both air bags deployed.

The trooper wrote in the report: "Note: No driver at scene of this collision."

A local towing company took the car to an impound lot. On Monday, a Smithfield police officer investigating the woman's disappearance found the body. The time and cause of her death was under investigation.

The trooper is on administrative leave.
