US official to visit new national monument in Ohio

WILBERFORCE, Ohio (AP) — Interior Secretary Ken Salazar will visit southwestern Ohio on Tuesday to celebrate the new Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument.

The monument in Wilberforce, just east of Dayton, preserves the home of Army Col. Charles Young. He was the first African-American to reach the rank of colonel.

The site is one of five newly designated national monuments. President Barack Obama used executive authority to protect the historic or ecologically significant sites.

Salazar is visiting the monuments to celebrate with the people who sought recognition for the sites.

The other sites are Rio Grande del Norte National Monument in New Mexico; First State National Monument in Delaware; Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument in Maryland, and San Juan Islands National Monument in Washington state.
