Ohio man who avoided murder trial gets prison

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A central Ohio man who once had a murder case dismissed because a prosecution witness failed to show for his trial has been sent to prison for sexually abusing two girls.

The Columbus Dispatch (http://bit.ly/10FZzLO ) reports that 42-year-old Quincy Phipps was sentenced Monday to 27 years in prison for rape and gross sexual imposition. He was convicted by a jury last month of abusing the girls, who were related to him by marriage.

In 2006, Phipps was indicted on a charge that he fatally shot a pizza shop manager in 1993.

The case had languished for years until Phipps' ex-girlfriend told detectives that he had confessed to her. Phipps was indicted, but his ex-girlfriend didn't show up to testify and couldn't be located.
