Flathead County horse diagnosed with Equine Herpes

KALISPELL, Mont. (AP) — Montana officials say a horse in Flathead County has been diagnosed with the neurological form of the equine herpes virus after likely being exposed at an event in Ravalli County.

The Daily Inter Lake reports (http://bit.ly/Zh1zce) the Montana Department of Livestock said on Thursday it's working with organizers of the event held earlier this month to notify other participants of possible exposure.

Assistant State Veterinarian Tahnee Szymanski says the infected horse became weak and two weeks after the event couldn't stand. Szymanski says the horse appears to have a less virulent strain and now appears to be improving.

Szymanski says the local club in Ravalli County that held the event is working with the state.
