COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The deadline is here for applications to a contest that state health officials hope will encourage kids to stay active and healthy.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control says Friday is the deadline for applications to its All-Health Team.

Up to a dozen groups will be picked, with each group receiving $500 toward improving their projects and the chance to be in a television commercial. Past members include the Swamp Fresh Garden Club at Ashley River High School in Summerville and the Kids Grow School Yard Classroom Garden at Charleston's Hursey Elementary School.

All-Health Team program manager Joann Moton Minder says nearly one in three high school students is overweight or obese. Minder says this program is a creative way to promote healthy activity and good health habits.
