PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — A 75-year-old Detroit-area woman says she fatally shot her teenage grandson after a tumultuous day in which he failed a drug test and demanded money and a car to leave the state.

Sandra Layne sobbed as she told jurors Wednesday that she feared for her life as well as for the safety of 17-year-old Jonathan Hoffman.

Sandra Layne is charged with first-degree murder in Oakland County court. There's no dispute she repeatedly shot Hoffman last year in West Bloomfield Township, even while he called 911 for help.

Layne says she got her gun after Hoffman kicked her in the abdomen and struck her in the head. Her lawyer asked if she wanted to kill her grandson. She replied, "Of course not."

Layne says her mourning never stops.
