HAMPTON, Iowa (AP) — Some members of the Hampton City Council are wondering whether the city should continue adding fluoride to the city's water.
The Mason City Globe Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/XIbtnO) that at Monday night's council meeting, Mayor Shawn Dietz said he didn't think fluoridation is necessary.
The city began adding fluoride in 1975. In 1999 that stopped because of the natural amount of fluoride found in the water. But in 2006 the city resumed adding fluoride to the supply.
Hampton dentist Paul Sensor says he and other dentists noticed an increase in their patients' tooth decay when it wasn't being added.
After the discussion the council members took no action but decided they wanted more time to examine the issue.
