LOS ANGELES (AP) — The recent, gasp-worthy kiss between "New Girl" stars Zooey Deschanel and Jake Johnson was the juicy plot twist that both fans and the show's cast have been waiting for.

At Monday's PaleyFest red carpet in Los Angeles, Deschanel said she's excited to explore the new storylines opened up by the budding relationship.

Johnson, who plays Deschanel's surly roommate on the Fox comedy, says audience reaction has been positive and immediate. He racked up roughly 20,000 new Twitter followers after the kiss aired Jan. 29.

Johnson hopes his characters' romance will emulate other iconic TV love stories, such as Sam and Diane of "Cheers."

In the meantime, he's looking to Ted Danson for inspiration.

"I watch it on a regular basis just to see what they did," said Johnson.
