WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says critics of the diversity of President Barack Obama's second-term Cabinet should wait until he completes it.
White House spokesman Jay Carney commented Tuesday in response to a letter to the president from Congressional Black Caucus head, Rep. Marcia Fudge. The Ohio Democrat expressed concern that an African-American wasn't among Obama's Cabinet appointments to date.
Asked about the letter, Carney said Obama is "deeply committed" to diversity in his Cabinet because he believes it makes for better decision-making. He encouraged critics to wait until the president has finished making appointments before assessing the level of diversity in the Cabinet.
Obama still has to name replacements for the secretaries of Labor, Commerce and Transportation, the U.S. trade representative and the Small Business Administration.
