RI reading event urges kids to eat healthy

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — More than 75,000 Rhode Island students are taking part in a statewide reading event aimed at promoting healthy eating and fighting childhood obesity.

Students at more than 200 schools, libraries, youth programs and health centers are taking part in Monday's event. Gov. Lincoln Chafee will be among a variety of guest narrators reading the children's book "Is Your Hair Made of Donuts?" by Rhode Island author Joy Feldman to the students.

The event recognizes March as National Nutrition Month.

Feldman says she wants to call attention to childhood obesity and empower young people to make healthier food choices for themselves. Her book is about two children and their adventure learning that they are what they eat.

State lawmakers also will be giving Feldman a proclamation on Tuesday for her efforts.
