Ohio officers shoot, kill man who injures them

Monday March 11, 2013 3:00 AM

MIDDLEFIELD, Ohio (AP) — Two Middlefield police officers have shot and killed a man who fired at them with a rifle during a traffic stop, injuring them both.

The Plain Dealer reports (bit.ly/YmJ6Y9) that a female officer was shot in the hand Sunday evening and is undergoing surgery at a Cleveland hospital. A male officer is hospitalized with leg injuries. The officers and the suspect were not identified.

Geauga Sheriff Daniel McClelland says the officers stopped the man's car at around 6 p.m. but before they could get out of their cruiser the man had left his car and started shooting. Both officers returned fire from their car and the man was hit.

The police car had a shattered windshield, multiple bullet holes, was leaking fluid and had flat tires Sunday night.
