TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — A Terre Haute teacher has enlisted colleagues to help an 8-year-old girl who needs a heart transplant.

WRTV reports (http://bit.ly/Zg2t7F ) Deming Elementary teacher Jodi Southard is selling her lesson plans on a website called Teachers Pay Teachers to raise money to help defray medical costs for Katelyn Newell.

Katelyn was born without a valve in her heart and has undergone three heart surgeries and has had a pacemaker installed. Doctors say she needs a heart transplant because her heart function continues to decline.

Southard and 21 other teachers have each offered their lesson plans in exchange for a $25 donation to Katelyn's fund.

The effort has raised nearly $10,000.

Katelyn's brother is a student in Southard's first-grade class.
