Ohio soldier dies in first Afghanistan deployment

Saturday March 9, 2013 10:15 AM

WEST ALEXANDRIA, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio soldier has died during his first deployment in Afghanistan in what the military says was a non-combat incident.

A news release from the Department of Defense says that 22-year-old Spc. Cody Suggs of West Alexandria in southwestern Ohio died at Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan on Thursday.

The release did not specify how Suggs died, only that it wasn't related to combat and that it was under investigation.

Ohio National Guard spokesman James Sims says he has no further information on what caused Suggs' death.

Suggs joined the Ohio National Guard in February 2009 and was a truck driver for the 1487th Transportation Company out of Piqua, Ohio. His unit arrived for a deployment in Afghanistan earlier this year.

Suggs is survived by his parents, who live in West Alexandria.
