CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Federal prosecutors in Wyoming will not file charges against two young elk hunters who killed a grizzly bear in Grand Teton National Park last fall.
Park officials announced Thursday that investigators have concluded the hunters acted in self-defense.
The bear charged the two and their father from 42 yards away on Thanksgiving Day. First, the father shot bear spray at the bear. The sons opened fire when the bear was 10 feet away. Three bullets brought down the bear, which weighed 534 pounds.
The Jackson Hole News & Guide has identified the father as 48-year-old David Trembly, of Dubois. His 20- and 17-year-old sons have not been identified.
Trembly did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
Grand Teton is one of the few national parks that allow hunting.
