Cleveland councilman pleads not guilty to DUI

CLEVELAND (AP) — A Cleveland city councilman accused of drunken driving for the third time has pleaded not guilty to a charge of driving under the influence and several traffic violations.

Councilman Zachary Reed entered the pleas Wednesday in Cleveland Municipal Court. Afterward, he told reporters he doesn't plan to step down from the council.

Police say the 51-year-old Reed was arrested in downtown Cleveland early Tuesday after running a red light and making an improper turn. Police say he failed a sobriety test and refused a breath test.

Reed's attorney has said the public shouldn't rush to judgment.

Reed served a 10-day sentence in 2008 on his second drunken-driving conviction. He has been on the council for 13 years.

He hasn't responded to messages left at his City Hall office seeking comment.
