SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Oscar winner Geena Davis says remarks reflecting disrespect for women by the host of the Academy Awards overshadowed the win of an animated film with a strong female character.

Davis, star of "Thelma & Louise," referenced host Seth MacFarlane's much-criticized Oscar routine during a ceremony on Monday at the state Capitol. She was among 11 California women honored for their achievements.

Davis said MacFarlane's quips about nude scenes and the attractiveness of several female actresses demonstrated how insensitive people can still be on gender issues.

She commended "Brave," which won best animated picture, as setting a positive example for girls.

Two female state lawmakers sent a letter to the motion picture academy asking it to condemn MacFarlane's performance as degrading toward women.
