HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — The chief of South Carolina's public health department is speaking to a group about obesity.

Department of Health and Environmental Control director Catherine Templeton is on Hilton Head Island on Friday to speak to a leadership gathering sponsored by Furman University's Riley Institute.

Organizers say the day's session is "Critical Issues 2013: Battling Childhood Obesity in S.C." Fighting obesity is one of Templeton's signature issues as DHEC director.

Also on the agenda for the meeting that runs through Sunday are diversity, poverty and economic issues.
