WESTMINSTER, Md. (AP) — A stomach virus has sickened dozens of students at a Maryland college.

McDaniel College officials said Thursday that more than 40 students went to the Westminster college's wellness center in a 48-hour period. The school says the students were suffering from gastroenteritis, which can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cramps and dehydration.

Students are being advised to wash their hands often to prevent the spread of the virus. School officials say class schedules have not been affected, but the hours of the school's wellness center are being expanded.

Spokeswoman Cheryl Knauer says some students have been taken to a local hospital, but none have been admitted.
