MacArthur grants go to nonprofits in 5 countries

CHICAGO (AP) — The MacArthur Foundation has named 13 organizations in five countries as winners of its annual "Award for Creative and Effective Institutions."

The nonprofit groups each will receive between $500,000 and $1.5 million.

The winners announced Thursday include a group that fights in India's courts for the rights of for poor pregnant women and an organization that helps struggling immigrants in Mexico.

Others receiving awards from the nonprofit-based MacArthur Foundation are groups in Kenya, Ecuador and the United States.

The Southwest Organizing Project in Chicago is receiving $750,000 for its work preventing foreclosures on the city's southwest side.

New York-based StoryCorps is getting $1 million to support its work recording the stories of a diverse range of Americans and archiving them for future generations.
