CHICAGO (AP) — An Illinois program for uninsured people with medical problems will not accept new enrollees after this week.
The Illinois Preexisting Condition Insurance Plan has been funded by the federal government under the Affordable Care Act. But it's a temporary program designed to help people until the national law was fully implemented in 2014.
That's when the health overhaul law will stop insurers from basing coverage or pricing decision on a person's health status.
More than 3,300 Illinois residents are enrolled under the Preexisting Condition Insurance Plan. Their coverage will continue through the end of the year. Starting Oct. 1, they will be able to shop for coverage on the new health insurance exchange.
