WARREN, Ohio (AP) — The alleged shooter in the 2009 northeastern Ohio slayings of a mother and her teen daughter has pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 19 years in prison.
Thirty-nine-year-old Melvin Turner pleaded guilty Tuesday to two counts of involuntary manslaughter and other charges in the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Wilneice Green and her 13-year-old daughter at their home near Youngstown.
Prosecutors said they agreed to the plea bargain because they lacked physical evidence tying Turner to the killings. But they relied on the testimony of Turner's four co-defendants, who have pleaded guilty to various crimes and face prison sentences of between 6 and 23 years.
The four others said they broke into the home to kill another man, but Green and her daughter were shot instead.
