NEW YORK (AP) — A husband has been arrested after authorities said he hacked at his wife with a meat cleaver in a grisly attack before firefighters rescued her on a New York City street.

Police say Ming Guang Huang was arrested early Monday on attempted murder and other charges. It's not immediately clear whether the 28-year-old has a lawyer. A message left at a possible phone number for him wasn't immediately returned.

Authorities say the attack unfolded Sunday on the main thoroughfare in New York City's Chinatown.

Firefighters say they saw Huang dragging a screaming woman along Canal Street. Authorities say he pulled out the knife and slashed her as firefighters rushed over and subdued him.

Police haven't released the wife's name. She's hospitalized. An update on her condition isn't immediately available.
