MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin is heading to Washington to talk about dyslexia as a learning disability, and he'll be speaking from personal experience.
Shumlin is scheduled to appear at an event at the National Press Club on Monday at which he'll speak about a condition with which he struggled as a child.
Shumlin's talk is being hosted by a group promoting a nationwide push to ensure all children can read by the end of third grade.
The Democratic governor has said he was struggling to read until one teacher took him under her wing and devoted a significant amount of extra time to working through his disability.
Shumlin is expected to push early identification of dyslexia and other learning disabilities, research-based lessons and new technology for affected students.
