Baby gorilla arrives at Cincinnati Zoo

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Cincinnati Zoo has welcomed a baby gorilla born nearly four weeks ago at a Texas zoo.

Cincinnati Zoo officials say the female baby gorilla arrived Friday from the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, Texas, where she was born Jan. 29. The baby was being hand-reared by keepers at the Texas zoo because her mother displayed a lack of maternal care.

The zoos agreed it was best to relocate the baby to the Cincinnati Zoo where two female gorillas are available to serve as potential surrogate mothers.

The still unnamed baby will spend time in the Children's Zoo Nursery for a few days to make sure she is healthy and has no contagious diseases before she is transferred to the zoo's Gorilla World exhibit.
