Physician at UI hospitals violates probation

Thursday February 21, 2013 2:30 PM

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A physician at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has violated a 2011 probation given for excessive use of alcohol.

The Iowa Board of Medicine released records Wednesday that show Wendy R. Smoker was fined $5,000 and given five years of probation in a settlement agreement.

Television station KCRG (http://bit.ly/12Sz08Z ) reports it's identical to a January 2011 citation, when the board concluded Smoker engaged in excessive use of alcohol. She was charged in July 2012 for failing to pay her fine on time and drinking alcohol abroad.

Smoker's probation terms are the same, but a physician will now monitor her and submit reports to the board. Her medical license could be suspended or revoked if she violates her probation again.

Smoker did not immediately return messages left Thursday.
