SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Hundreds of drivers have been stranded on a mountain highway between Los Angeles and Bakersfield as heavy and sudden snow hit the area.

California Highway Patrol Officer Ed Smith tells KCAL-TV that conditions deteriorated quickly on Highway 58 near Tehachapi late Tuesday, and a 60-mile stretch of road had to be shut down.

Smith says hundreds of vehicles were temporarily stuck, but the patrol and road crews are slowly helping them exit the highway.

No injuries were reported.

The highway was especially crowded because of worries that a section of busy Interstate 5 would be closed by bad weather.
