SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — The New Mexico Department of Health reports two children have died from the flu in New Mexico over the past month, bringing to 89 the number of flu- and pneumonia-related deaths in the state this season.

Health officials say a 2-year-old girl from McKinley County and 15-year-old boy from Torrance County have died from influenza-related illnesses. That compares to just one flu-related pediatric death last season.

The health department says there has been widespread flu activity throughout the state over the last six weeks. They say it appears to have peaked the last week in December, but remains higher than usual.
