INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indiana Pharmacy Board has revoked the state license of a Massachusetts pharmacy linked to an outbreak of fungal meningitis that has killed 10 people in Indiana and sickened about 70 others.
Attorney General Greg Zoeller (ZEHL'-ur) said Tuesday that New England Compounding Center cannot operate in Indiana for at least seven years. The company could apply for a new license afterward, but it would need the board's approval.
He says the pharmacy failed to ensure its epidural steroid injections were safe for patients. The tainted steroids were distributed to six Indiana clinics before the company recalled them.
Zoeller says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control has identified 10 deaths and 79 total cases of fungal meningitis in Indiana from the pharmacy's steroid injections as of Feb. 4.
