CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A New Hampshire woman who fought to repeal the federal law that bars her wife from receiving military benefits has died after a battle with breast cancer. Charlie Morgan was 48.
Morgan was a chief warrant officer in the New Hampshire Army National Guard. A spokesman for Gov. Maggie Hassan says Morgan died Sunday at a hospice in Dover.
Morgan was a nationally recognized advocate in the effort to repeal the federal law that prohibits the Pentagon from recognizing same-sex marriages. She was a plaintiff in a lawsuit saying the act violated her constitutional rights.
She worried about her spouse being unable to take care of their daughter without federal marriage benefits if she died. Hassan says Morgan's fight for equality will outlive her fight against cancer.
