PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (AP) — Progress is being made as highway crews dig out a snow-covered 27-mile stretch of the Long Island Expressway closed in both directions on eastern Long Island.
The area got slammed with 30 inches of snow in some locations. Hundreds of cars became snarled on area roadways including the LIE at the height of the storm.
The expressway is closed from Exit 57 in Islandia to Exit 73 in Riverhead. It was originally expected to reopen at 5 p.m. Sunday, but was pushed back to 9 p.m.
The Long Island Power Authority reports that less than 500 customers remain without power islandwide Sunday evening. That's down from a peak of almost 50,000.
The Long Island Rail Road says trains will operate on a nearly normal schedule for Monday's commute.
