Board to rule on mercy for condemned Ohio killer

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Ohio Parole Board is preparing to recommend for or against clemency for a condemned man who fatally shot an adult bookstore security guard at the end of a six-state crime spree.

Friday's decision will come a little more than a month ahead of 48-year-old Frederick Treesh's scheduled execution on March 6.

Treesh was sentenced to die for shooting 58-year-old Henry Dupree during a robbery in Eastlake in northeast Ohio on Aug. 27, 1994, following a series of crimes in Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Attorneys for Treesh say he was on a cocaine high and regrets what happened, while prosecutors say he is an unrepentant killer.

Gov. John Kasich (KAY'-sik) has the final say.
