Children of immigrants more Democrat than parents

WASHINGTON (AP) — A study finds that U.S.-born children of Hispanic immigrants are more likely than their parents to say they are Democrats as they integrate into American life.

They are maintaining strong ties to their cultural heritage while casting themselves as liberal on social issues.

The Pew Research Center report highlights difficulties for the GOP following elections in November, when President Obama won with big support from nonwhite voters. It tracks the progress of second-generation Americans, most of them Latinos and Asians.

The study finds that adult children of immigrants are doing better than new immigrants based on broad indicators such as income, education and English proficiency.

They are also drifting left politically. Among Hispanics, 71 percent who are second-generation lean Democrat, compared to 63 percent in the first generation.
