YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) — Documents obtained by a newspaper show employees of a northeast Ohio company were directed to dump up to 20,000 gallons of gas drilling wastewater down a storm drain.
The (Youngstown) Vindicator (http://bit.ly/Wvfb1T) reports that two state regulatory agencies are conducting an investigation into how and why the wastewater from hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, was dumped in the Youngstown storm drain last week.
U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, who represents the region, said he was "furious" about the development.
The alleged dumping occurred at the headquarters of D&L Energy Group. Documents said it happened when a large storage tank, capable of holding up to 20,000 gallons of waste — including oil and brine — was being cleaned by an employee of the company.
Company officials haven't addressed the alleged violation.
