Eastern Ky. health department sued by employee

MANCHESTER, Ky. (AP) — An eastern Kentucky health department has been sued by an employee who claims she was punished for reporting possible retirement fund violations to the attorney general.

WYMT-TV (http://bit.ly/YXmVOk ) reports the lawsuit filed this week by registered nurse Fonda Harris accuses the Cumberland Valley District Health Department of violating Kentucky's Whistleblower Act.

Harris claims she was told by the Kentucky Retirement System that no money had gone into her retirement account for at least six months. But she says the money came out of her paychecks.

Harris reported the situation to the attorney general's office, which she says resulted in a workplace reprimand.

The health department's interim director recently said money was withheld from retirement accounts because the district could not afford matching payments. The district hopes to resume payments in March.
