DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — A planned tribute at a Dayton nightclub for Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner has been canceled because the Ohio Players frontman had expressed that he didn't want any public memorials.
Bonner, a Hamilton native who starred with the hit-making 1970s funk band, died last month of cancer at age 69.
The Dayton Daily News (http://bit.ly/WsZl9P) reports that a good friend had planned a public tribute at a nightclub on March 14, which would have been Bonner's 70th birthday. But it was canceled after Bonner's longtime attorney raised objections.
The attorney said the musician was a private person, and his Dayton-area family members didn't want any public events.
However, a memorial planned by Bonner's Cincinnati-area relatives is going on as scheduled on Saturday at a 500-seat church.
