Iowa AP reporter and editor Melanie Welte dies

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Longtime Associated Press journalist Melanie Welte has died at a Des Moines hospital at age 53.

Her husband, David Welte, says she died Thursday after contracting pneumonia while awaiting a liver transplant.

Welte worked for the AP for 21 years. For much of that time, the news day for the AP in Iowa began with a 5 a.m. message from Welte to AP customers that announced she was on the hunt for news.

While her colleagues were still in bed, Welte was making phone calls to confirm facts and writing stories that broadcasters and newspapers could trust would come quick and always be accurate.

Before joining the AP, Welte was an award-winning broadcaster at KSEZ-FM/KMNS-AM in Sioux City. She also worked at radio stations in Pensacola, Fla., and Enterprise, Ala.
