ATLANTA (AP) — Authorities say they are investigating whether a shooting at a middle school in Atlanta may have been gang-related.

Atlanta Police Chief George Turner says the 15-year-old suspect has been charged with aggravated assault and firearms counts. Police did not identify the shooter because he is a juvenile.

Turner said at a news conference Friday that investigators believe two groups of students had some sort of argument before the shooting Thursday. However, Turner says police do not know if the 14-year-old who was shot was a gang member or if he was the intended target.

The chief also says it is not known how the suspect obtained the gun or got it onto campus. The school does have metal detectors, but the shooting happened outside the building in a courtyard.
