SITKA, Alaska (AP) — The flu bug is taking a toll on students at Sitka schools.

The Daily Sitka Sentinel (http://bit.ly/Ti1XGN) reports more than 11 percent of the students in Sitka public schools were absent Thursday.

Sitka High has an enrolment of 341 and 42 students were missing.

Superintendent Steve Bradshaw says normal attendance is 92 to 96 percent in elementary grades.

Administrative assistant Carrie Spackman says absences among staff members have not been as high.

Absences also are not as high over at Mount Edgecumbe High School.

Physician assistant Kari Lundgren says just one student among the more than 380 enrolled was in "sick bay" at the state-run boarding school.

Lundgren says a high number of Mount Edgecumbe students received flu shots.
