Ohio bus driver pleads for pardon in abuse case

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A former Head Start bus driver accused of molesting preschoolers is asking the Ohio Parole Board to pardon her for crimes she still denies she committed.

Nancy Smith has been free since 2009 because of a paperwork error in her case. On Tuesday, she pleaded with the parole board to free her permanently and recommend that she be pardoned.

Smith — a Lorain County grandmother now in her mid-50s — already has served more than 14 years in prison. She was sentenced to 30-to-90 years in 1994.

The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer (http://bit.ly/14uY84B ) reports that prosecutors said they are not opposed to Smith's sentence being commuted, but they oppose a pardon.

She had a chance at being paroled in 2007, but would not admit to the crime.
