PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The former mayor of a tiny but troubled Rhode Island city has agreed to pay a $7,000 penalty and admit he violated ethics rules.
The state Ethics Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to approve the agreement with former Central Falls Mayor Charles Moreau (mur-OH').
Moreau accepted a new furnace from a campaign contributor who got a lucrative city contract to board up vacant homes. He pleaded guilty in November to a federal corruption charge and is scheduled to be sentenced next month.
Moreau stepped down as mayor last year. He was stripped of his powers in 2010 when the state stepped in to manage the city's finances.
The 1.3-square-mile city of 19,000 people emerged from bankruptcy last fall but remains under the control of a state-appointed receiver.
