BALTIMORE (AP) — The mayor of New York City's latest gift to his alma mater has pushed him over the $1 billion mark in total donations to Johns Hopkins University.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has donated $350 million, mostly to help expand research on issues like as global health and urban revitalization.

The university says $250 million from the latest donation will go to a variety of cross-disciplinary subjects, also including water resources, and health care.

The remaining $100 million will go to need-based financial aid for undergraduate students, awarding 2,600 Bloomberg scholarships in the next 10 years.

The mayor says he doesn't know any "other institution that can make a bigger difference in lives around the world through its groundbreaking research_especially in the field of public health."
