SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle police are holding their first gun buyback event today, offering gift cards worth up to $200 to people who turn in weapons.

The event is being held in a parking lot downtown from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The city has collected donations totaling nearly $120,000 to pay for a series of gun buyback events.

Participants have been asked to unload and secure their weapons in the trunk of their vehicle or in a locked container. They should wait for a police offer to come to their vehicle to safely retrieve the weapons and ammunition.

People will receive up to $100 gift cards for hand guns, shotguns and rifles, and up to $200 for assault weapons. Full gift card value will only be given for working weapons.
