HONOLULU (AP) — A Coast Guard rescue swimmer is spending a week in the brig while the service investigates how and why he disappeared for three months as it was preparing to discharge him for illegally using marijuana.

Petty Officer 1st Class Russell Matthews is being held at a Navy-run facility in Pearl Harbor for detained personnel from all branches of the military.

He hasn't been arrested. But the Coast Guard says he was deemed a flight risk because of his unauthorized absence and the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.

The service has launched a review of Matthews' case.
