AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A spokesman for the chairman over Texas' troubled $3 billion cancer-fighting effort says criminal prosecutors have cleared current state officials and board members in their investigation.
Austin lobbyist Bill Miller said Tuesday that the Travis County district attorney's office informed officials with the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas that the agency was "free from suspicion." But a statement from Miller said nothing about former executives who resigned in recent month as problems mounted.
Gregg Cox, a Travis County prosecutor who oversees the public integrity unit that is investigating the agency, was not in the office Tuesday. A phone message was not immediately returned.
Miller is the spokesman for Jimmy Mansour, chairman of the agency's oversight board. Miller said the agency is still working with investigators.
