WASHINGTON (AP) — A report from a human rights group faults D.C. police for having a callous attitude toward sexual assault victims and failing to investigate at least 170 reports of attacks over three years.
Human Rights Watch is releasing the 197-page report next week. It finds that police never filed incident reports for more than a third of the sex assault cases that came in through Washington Hospital Center, where sexual assault victims are sent for forensic examinations.
An incident report is required if any kind of investigation is done.
The report looked at a timeframe between October 2008 and September 2011.
D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier says she has doubts about the report's methodology.
