PINKHAM NOTCH, N.H. (AP) — The mother of a retired Marine injured in a New Hampshire avalanche says her son was climbing Mount Washington to raise funds and awareness for families of Special Operations forces killed and wounded in action.
Denise Zeier says her son, 26-year-old Sgt. Keith Zeier, says he has no fear and is passionate about the cause. He was wounded in Iraq in 2006 and had a leg amputated several years later.
Zeier says she hasn't spoken to her son since Thursday evening's avalanche, but his doctors told her his injuries are not life threatening and that his prognosis is promising. She said Friday that he is resting comfortably in stable condition.
According to the group Ascents of Honor, Zeier was climbing with 11 other people, two of whom were also injured.
