OC woman gets probation for assisting suicide

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Orange County prosecutors say a Laguna Woods woman has been sentenced to three years of probation for aiding a World War II veteran's suicide.

Spokeswoman Farrah Emami says 66-year-old Elizabeth Barrett was sentenced Friday for providing 86-year-old Jack Koency with Oxycontin-laced yogurt.

Koency decided to commit suicide, though he was not terminally ill or immobile.

Barrett drove him to make his funeral arrangements on Sept. 30, 2011.

Later that day, she crushed the pills, mixed a lethal dose into the yogurt and gave it to Koency, who ate it, went to his bedroom, lay down and died. She called 911 to report the death a while later.

Authorities investigating the death discovered a motion-activated camera in the home, which captured Barrett lacing the yogurt and giving it to Koency.
